Pete Prisco of CBS Sportsline.com has released his annual list of the 50 best players in the NFL. Predictably, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are one and two. Your own Minnesota Vikings are represented by a pair of players – DT Kevin Williams at 18 and LG Steve Hutchinson at 35. And the rival Green Bay Packers…
Um, sorry Pack – none of your guys made the top 50. No, not even Favre. Two Bears made the list though – Brian Urlacher at 10 and Tommie Harris at 28. There were no Lions.
Prisco is a little excessive in his love for a couple of guys. Chad Johnson at number 7? Does anyone really think Ocho Cinco is the seventh best player in the league? Better than Larry Johnson (20)? Better than Drew Brees (15)? And what about Dwight Freeney at 12? Is he really better than Jason Taylor (16) at this point?
Maybe I’m prejudiced against Freeney – it’s been a couple years since we watched him torch us. We did see Taylor and Julius Peppers carve up the Vikes’ tackles last year though, so our memories of their dominance are naturally more fresh. On the burning-the-Vikings scale, I’d have to rate Peppers number 1, Taylor 2 and Aaron Kampman 3 (for lifetime achievement).
