Rumor Mill: RT Trade In The Works?

Posted by: danzinski

Could the Vikings be in the market for a new starting RT?  Earlier today, it was revealed that the team will be cutting both their back-up centers, Norm Katnik and Kyle Cook.  Unless the team plans on rolling with nothing behind Matt Birk – a guy who’s had injury problems in the past – they will likely be shifting current starting RT Ryan Cook to the back-up center spot.  That leaves Marcus Johnson as our starting RT – and the word “shaky” doesn’t even begin to describe the way Johnson has performed there in the past. Therefore, it seems likely – unless there’s another center prospect somewhere on the squad – that some kind of deal is in the words for a new RT.  Speculation in recent days has centered around the 49ers’ Kwame Harris, who has lost his starting job to rookie Joe Staley.  Rumors have Viking DE Darrion Scott being moved to San Francisco in exchange for Harris.  Scott has been held out of practice for almost a week now, with what Brad Childress called “a ding.”  Maybe something is in the works, maybe not.  What’s certain is that the Vikings are very unsettled on the right side of their O-Line, and have a surplus on their D-Line.

I'm not sure it would disrupt the team too much to have Cook as both RT and backup C.  Or as a general backup OL, able to fill in at any position if needed.Essentially, he can play one position while serving as the backup to another position.  If Cook starts at RT, then Marcus Johnson fills in if either Cook struggles, Cook gets hurt, or Cook has to move to center if Birk gets hurt.Just possibilities.
