Vikings Come Up In Patriots Moss-Dump Discussion
It appears the Patriots are serious about getting rid of Randy Moss. Stories out of the Northeast say Moss is already bitching about his role in the offense, and Bill Belichick, as we know, is not one to suffer crybabies and malcontents. No, the Pats have not yet cut Moss – but it’s possible they’ve only held onto him this long in hopes some sucker will come along wanting to make a trade.
Enter the Vikings – not because there’s anything concrete to report, but only because playing connect-the-dots is so much damn fun. ProFootballTalk, a great site for such speculative games, has thrown out the possibility that Zygi Wilf, worried about the prospect of the Metrodome not selling out, could go over Brad Childress’s head and get a deal done for gate-attraction Moss. This begs a couple questions: 1) Would acquiring Moss actually put enough butts in seats to make it worthwhile and; 2) Is Zygi really indifferent enough to his relationship with Childress that he would go against Brad’s wishes and get a player Brad clearly wants nothing to do with? The answer to 1 is probably “yes” – Moss’s return would drum up enough interest to sell the seats that remain unsold. That leaves question 2 – and frankly I suspect the answer to that one is “no.” I just don’t believe Zygi would pull rank on Childress that way, saddling Childress with a player everyone knows would be a headache. So, forget about Moss coming here. Even if he would be fun to have around, he would not help the team. In fact he would probably retard its progress, and particularly that of Tarvaris Jackson. Zygi Wilf, I believe, would not place a cheap publicity stunt – cause that’s what getting Moss would amount to at this point – over the long-term good of the club. But then I’ve been wrong before.
