Legendary Vikings coach Bud Grant says Tarvaris Jackson hasn’t had enough of a shot yet for anyone to know whether he’s NFL caliber. The quote:
[Fans] are trying to evaluate him on the basis of very few games. I don’t know that that’s fair to him, to try to put a tag on him at this point.
Quarterbacks do move around a little bit. I mean, Tarkenton went from here to the Giants and back to us, and was a great quarterback. So, on the basis of a year or two, I’m not sure. You put [Jackson] with the best players, and he’ll win, too.
With all due respect to Bud – Jackson is already with good players, on the O-line, in the backfield and on defense, and generally if the Vikings win it’s in spite of him.
The big problem for T-Jack is that, if Childress and the front office folks get it into their heads that next year is a must-win year for them, they aren’t going to be so patient. Look for someone – maybe Chad Pennington, maybe somebody else – to be added to the roster as insurance.
