ProFootballTalk reports that Raiders safety Michael Huff is being put up for trade by the team. The apparent thinking in Oakland is that they’ve spent too many draft picks on defensive backs in recent years, and they’d like to cash one of them in.
Huff has been solid if unspectacular in his two years in the league. He’s surpassed 75 tackles in each of those seasons, but has only one career pick. He’s also never missed a game. The Raiders have reportedly said they believe Huff has yet to tap his potential – the normal sort of thing teams say when they’re trying to trade a guy (it wouldn’t make much sense to say the guy sucks).
There are a couple of downsides to Huff. One is his giant contract. The other is that the Vikings are looking for a run-stuffing type strong safety, and Huff may not exactly fit that profile going by what he gave Oakland. The Raiders have actually mulled moving Huff to free safety, but we already have Darren Sharper there. I’m not sure Huff would be worth the draft pick Oakland would want for him, or the money you’d have to cough up.
