So the Vikings missed out on Trent Green, and Arizona doesn’t look willing to part with Kurt Warner. Vinny Testaverde has officially hung them up, and as far as I know, Drew Bledsoe has no desire to make a comeback.
This leaves very few options when it comes to signing an old, over-the-hill quarterback to hold down the #2 slot this season behind Tarvaris Jackson. But wait…there’s now someone new in the mix.
The 49ers decided to part with Dilfer today, since they already have Alex Smith, Shaun Hill and (snicker) J.T. O’Sullivan under contract. There’s no word yet on whether Dilfer plans to continue his career or not, but if he wants to, I see no reason why the Vikings shouldn’t at least bring him in for a talk.
I mean, is Dilfer not exactly the kind of quarterback Brad Childress should love? The caretaker QB who doesn’t turn the ball over, makes the right plays, won’t win the game for you but won’t get you killed?
Who better to teach Tarvaris Jackson the ins-and-out of boring game managing than Trent Dilfer, the poster-boy for the safe, non-gunslinging approach to the position?
Childress should be all over this guy.
