Matt Birk will not get a contract extension, Brad Childress confirmed today.
Everyone suspected Matt was unhappy when he decided to skip the Vikings’ voluntary conditioning program, and now we know why.
Childress spoke glowingly of Birk nonetheless:
He’s been a loyal guy. He’s been a good football player. He’s been a Pro Bowler. Just the fact that you want to see. You want to see him play. He may afford us the opportunity to re-sign him or he may stick his nose up in the air. I just want to see him play, that’s all. I think people make a lot of it. He’s got a contract. He’s got a good contract. Everyone wants to get a year ahead of themselves. Let’s take it one day at a time.
Clearly, Chilly and the brain trust are not convinced that Matt has enough left in the tank to be worth the money beyond this year. If they did, then they would’ve extended him the same way they did Pat Williams, who is actually a couple years older than Birk.
I’m sure Matt will not sulk…he’ll come out once camp starts and put in his normal effort. He’ll be a solid player this year, and at the end of the season, he can go make big free agent bucks somewhere else if he wishes.

Well now, isn't this interesting? I've never liked Birk and think this will help to him either signing an extension that actually pays him what he's worth or the douchebag riding off into the sunset on his hernia!Guy has been playing so poorly of late he looked like a swinging toll booth the last two years! And if you think I'm embellishing this statement just rewind your game tapes and watch how many times he's missed or whiffed on blocks straight up the gut!Maybe he's not as "smart" as some of you like to think! I hear Harvard Grads just need to carry a "C" average nowadays!Don't get me wrong, I think he's been one of the best when he actually has played at that all deserving All-Pro level, but getting selected to the Pro-Bowl doesn't mean squat IMHO!Birk has gotten there on reputation alone the last two seasons cause like I said, his play on the field certainly didn't win him any ALL-PRO selections lately, now has it?Good call on Chili's part. Finally a decision I can actually agree with him on!
