The Vikings had Clemson defensive end Phillip Merling in for a visit on Wednesday. Merling has been unable to work out for teams so far this off-season owing to the sports hernia surgery he had in March, but he will reportedly have a work-out on April 24.
Merling is expected to be sitting there for the Vikes when they pick 17th in the first round. Other top defensive end prospects include Calais Campbell of Miami and Derrick Harvey of Florida, but there’s a pretty good chance neither of those guys will be on the board when the Vikings pick. Obviously, there are health concerns regarding Merling. Sports hernias are nothing to scoff at. Just ask Matt Birk. If you can find him.
