The latest Jared Allen rumblings have the Vikings not trading for the Chiefs DE before or on draft day, but waiting until after the draft and signing him to an offer sheet that includes a poison pill.
The Vikings front office has already perfected the art of the poison pill, having used it to pry Steve Hutchinson away from the Seahawks. Poison Pill II would result in the Vikes having to give up their 2009 and 2010 first-round picks. Since we would win the Super Bowl the next two years with Allen, those would not be great picks anyway
The Vikings, at any rate, are clearly in the driver’s seat when it comes to acquiring Allen’s services. They’ve had him in Winter Park all weekend, have been feeding him and buttering him up, showing him around those awesome state-of-the-art facilities Zygi Wilf ponied up the cash for. He’s as good as in purple:

Update: In my initial laziness I neglected to mention that the Vikes are still pursuing the trade route. Clearly, they want to get the best deal possible. If it were me, I wouldn’t want the Chiefs to know I was willing to sign the offer sheet, because then they’d realize I was willing to give up two firsts and my negotating position would be hurt. So I don’t know if there’s anything to the PFT story about the Vikes being willing to go with the offer sheet. I have to stop thinking about this for awhile because it’s making my neurons ache.

Here are my thoughts:1. I don’t think you would have to use a poison pill, since the Chiefs are willing to trade Allen. That would actually be a dumb move, because instead of negotiating the price down you wind up paying the max of 2 first round draft picks.2. No offense but the Vikings have the worst uniforms in the NFL. Those things are hideous. I like their old ones better.
Okay, I should’ve been clearer…the Vikes would only use the offer sheet if they can’t swing the trade. The poison pill would be to cover their asses in case the Chiefs suddenly change their minds and decide to match. This is coming from one of those vaunted PFT league sources so I don’t know…
As a Viking fan, I love the "by-any-means-neccesary" approach to aquiring the guys that we want. As a football fan, I think it’s a bad idea. It will only serve as a distraction to a team that really doesn’t need any. The negative press, the constant interviews, etc. The only thing this team should be dealing with is a football field.
Amen JD
If we review the 2004 kenechi was #1 of 80 & jared was #28 of 80 at de pos. one from USC the other from Idaho State. Two guys on the list for the 2008 draft are Brain Johnston (Gardner-Webb, better speed than jared same size), matail burnett (Utha ). Don’t waste the upper picks.
Seems the Vikes are not jumping the gun on an Allan trade. Maybe waiting to see if KC will lower some of their demands which would be good. Focus on what needs to be focused on-the draft. To much energy on a trade that might not come through is not going to negate the fact that right now our best hopes are riding on the right picks for the future-DE, OT, and yes QB. It will be exciting ttosee what the Vikes have brewing for Sat. Let’s hope we get some solid guys at the top and some sleepers at the bottom.
PS- Is it me or are some of you getting tired of hearing Philip Merling as our 1st round pick or DE entirely in the 1st round. Many good DE’s come in later picks and it seems like we have been a little"cursed" with 1st round DE’s. Hopefully McKinny can clean up his nose and we can get a quality tackle on the other side and maybe pick up an overlooked guard later. Many have Kelly dropping to a late #2 so shore up the future at WR with a big guy. So many what ifs. Maybe Flacco or Brohm with a #2?? If Chilly is still bent on staying with T-jax I still think Booty will be a 4th or 5th pick. This will be an interesting draft and I think the 1st pick won’t be what we expect unless Derrick Harvey is still on the board. Good luck Vikes.
I just don’t see Allen happening if it’s not for picks this year. This club has put too much emphasis on the draft and we have a rapidly aging defense that is going to need lots of replacements in a year or two, including SS, CB, DT, poss MLB… And don’t forget we will still need a C and maybe RT next year… I just don’t see why we should mortgage the future when we’re not even halfway done building it yet.
Well put JD. That’s what makes this draft look so interesting. I agree, center is a future need. Can’t believe they thought they could eventually put Cook there??? I think the only definite is if Derrick Harvey is on the board. He could fall to a mid round pick but I don’t see it. Then what Mehrling? I’m not sold on the guy after watching a number of SEC games down here. Then again I could be wrong. Like I said, it will be an interesting draft. Hope to see some of you on line Sat. We can share our predictions and the right picks get to gloat a little
Have a good day. Dr. apppt. so keep your fingers crossed that I can get a wound vac to help heal my back faster.
Perhaps vikingsvance. I have a date Friday night and may very well be preoccupied during the draft if all goes well
I don’t have instant messaging because i refuse to use it, but feel free to hit me up at jpdeiley@gmail.com. Love talking football, especially with all this draft/trade craziness that’s going on.
Good luck on the date. Don’t lose too much sleep Fri. you probobly can be awake by the time we pick anyway. Maybe if things go well you could haul her down for the Tampa game-hee hee.Seriously, if you. or any of the gang here, want to come we can arrange a block of seats. I want to get them early enough as I will need handicapped seating. My e-mail is vgerkovich@yahoo.com My appt went well wih the wound Doc. today. My hope is we get Derrick Harvey to drop to us but his stock is rising. Merling will not be the best player available in my opinion. Kiper had a list of smaller school sleeper DE’s.One kid was real big and a good 40 time but didn’t write his name down Wonder if we should gamble that route and take Jackson or Flacco in the 1st. I would be horrible at the Vikes draft table this year. But I like Flacco and some think he is a better prospect than Ryan. Peace.
BIG NEWS I JUST READ-CHEIFS AGREE TO TRADE ALLEN TO VIKINGS!I just read this on another Vikings site. Sorry don’t have details yet but will look.Vance
NFL.com No details on site yet
NFL.com says its true they did sign him, its on the front page! but no videos or reports yet, it just says they signed him. NICE DUDE!
Now I see we gave up 3 picks-the1st and both our 3rds. Why not have offered a 3rd next year or at least ask to swap #2 positions. We better make our #2 count big!
Vance… Merling played for Clemson… which is in the ACC not SEC.
Your right. I see the ACC a lot too. Again, my memory was messed up after the accident. The accident was Dec 6 and was in a coma for 5 weeks. They thought I had permanent brain damage (which my friends had said for years)
I explained it to JD. I know a lot of things from before but just forget. If you didn’t read I was in a truck roll over and was thrown out and have lost the ues of my legs but still have hope. The Drs/ were amazed that I can stand alone and use a walker.I just wanted to explain if you didn’t read it. I get embarrased alot as I’ll be with a friend and forget their name. I don’t know if I’ll work again so the Vikings are my hobby to follow at home. I forget my football stats, names, teams and yes, conferences now and then:( I don’t mind if I get ribbed. Just want people to understand I am a college graduate so no dummy. I am certainly not asking for sympathy just to laugh with me when I am on this Green Bay Vikings site or was that Chicago? Kidding-I would never forget my Minnesota Vikings. But either way Ryan, I still agree, Merling is a slug and now we don’t have to worry about it.Again. Sorry for the long explanation. I feel like a moron sometimes but I have had a great time meeting you guys here. Thanks for making my days fun by reading your comments and allowing me to share comments. Laying in bed watching TV can get boring after awhile so this site is great
