Vikings Draft Safety Tyrell Johnson in 2nd Round
It was bound to be a quiet day for the Vikings after they traded their first-round pick to the Chiefs as part of the Jared Allen deal. They did end up making a tiny bit of noise though, by making a deal with the Eagles to trade up a few slots in the second round. For a second, it seemed they might be entertaining taking either Chad Henne or Brian Brohm. But instead they went with Arkansas State safety Tyrell Johnson.
Here are the vitals on Johnson:
Height: 6-0
Weight: 207
40 time: 4.41
Was named Defensive Player of the Year in the Sunbelt conference. Tied for 12th in the country with 6 interceptions.
Was rated the best overall safety by Mel Kiper.
Here’s his highlight reel:
We definitely needed depth at safety. This guy’s big and fast and a good tackler and will make a solid replacement for Darren Sharper when he gets ready to move on (which will be soon).

With 2 quality QB’s amd Malcom Jeiiy available we take a safety? Sorry Darren ain’t dead yet but we needed to shore up an offense to compliment the D. P assing on Brohm was another stupid move.Safety was not an immediate need.
April 26th, 2008 at 8:36 pmI wondered about this pick a little at first, but it makes sense. If Sharper’s injured, or wears down over the season, who’s there to back him up? <sound of crickets chirping>Receivers are notoriously hard to choose. First rounders bust all the time. Fourth and fifth round receivers are almost as likely to be impact players as sencond rounders. Corners and Safeties, on the other hand, aren’t usually as much of risk.
April 26th, 2008 at 11:09 pmSorry, forgot to add, if you don’t think this is true, just ask Detroit.
April 26th, 2008 at 11:10 pmThey had a chance a a QB, they really should have taken it. I realize they want to completely stack the defense, but what good is a 0-0 tie every game? At this point…Colt Brennan! Whatever, give us something to say, "Well, it could happen" about. If all of the fans know how Jackson will turn out (inconsisently mediocre at best), why can’t the front office figure it out?
April 27th, 2008 at 2:27 amAgree PB. Dahan, you are right about some recievers but then we gave up those 4th round picks to move up a few notches. If you wanted Tyrell and with all the other good prospects up there, why take away another (and last) quality lot of picks. Bennon and Booty will probobly be gone when we pick our 5′’s We could have saved our 4 picks and hoped Johnson was available, and if not, we still had some decent O-line, WR and QB prospects to nail. I just think the Vikes are to quick to jump the gun when negotiating trades. Another day or 2 and would we have been able to to give KC a 3rd rounder next year instead of both this year (for Allen. I hope both these guys turn out to be great additions for the Vikes and I "eat crow" Time will tell.
