Griffin Looks Good

SI’s Jim Trotter is high on third-year cornerback Cedric Griffin, who I thought took a step backward last year.  Trotter on Griffin’s training camp performance:

Cornerback Cedric Griffin might be the most improved starter. The third-year pro struggled to finish pass plays last year in his first season as a fulltime starter. He would be in position or around the ball, but finished the year with only 14 pass breakups and no interceptions. In camp this season he looks a lot more comfortable and is making plays on the ball. That’s a good thing, because with standout Antoine Winfield on the other side at cornerback, the former second-round pick is going to see a lot of footballs.

I thought Cedric’s big problem last year was getting burned at the line, but his ball-skills weren’t so hot either (you could say that about our whole defensive backfield frankly).  Let’s hope he’s really improved as much as Trotter says.  Cedric seems like a confident enough guy to handle the cornerback position - maybe now he’s matured enough to become really serious about his craft.  Perhaps he’ll even jump a few routes this year and make some plays.
