Defense Takes Two Big Hits

The Vikings‘ defense got a whole lot thinner yesterday with the announcement that both linebacker/special teams bad-ass Heath Farwell and backup left end Jayme Mitchell will be lost for the season with torn ACLs. Both injuries happened during Friday night’s preseason tilt with the Seahawks…need I reiterate my disdain for preseason? For the record…Farwell’s tear is in the right knee while Mitchell’s is in the left. This takes away our fourth linebacker and our second left end. And did I mention that our starting left end Ray Edwards has already been suspended once for steroids and has missed time this off-season with a bad back? I’m sure the team will be all over the waiver wires…not that they wouldn’t have been anyway.

A quick quiz: Who is currently the Vikings’ #2 left defensive end? Leger Douzable. I thought that was a character from a Rene Clair film. Yes, I just dropped a Rene Clair reference in a football blog. A nous la liberte…check it out. French people singing their dialogue, and Charlie Chaplin totally ripped it off for Modern Times.

Back to football: Madieu Williams, who missed Friday’s game with a bad neck, was held out of most practice activities yesterday. Gosh, I hope this isn’t some kind of recurring issue for Madieu. Our defense already looks like the quarantine tent in Cloverfield and the season hasn’t started yet.
