Struggling Williamson

Troy Williamson has still not gotten it together in Jacksonville. A report of his performance in a recent preseason game:

For someone who was an offensive star in spring OTAs, he’s looking more like the receiver who went bust in Minnesota since the pads went on. The only ball Williamson grabbed from a quarterback was on an end-around from backup Cleo Lemon, which resulted in a 6-yard gain. Williamson had a pass from David Garrard go off his chest just before he took a big hit from linebacker Matt McCoy. Two kickoff returns resulted in just 25 total yards. So far this preseason, Williamson’s terrific speed hasn’t really gotten him anywhere.

The Jags people are finding out what Vikings fans already knew about Williamson:  He’s got terrific straight-ahead speed but no shiftiness or lateral moves (hence his ineffectiveness on kick returns); he can catch with the best of them in practice but something goes haywire in games and he simply can’t close his hands on the ball when it gets there.  No amount of positive thinking is ever going to change that.  Williamson is a fast runner who can’t play wide receiver in the NFL.  Sorry Jacksonville.  No use dwelling on it.  Just cut him and move on.

He’s been given the ball from Garrard all of two times in the preseason and one of the passes was terrible. He got hurt and is nursing the injury. It is way, way too soon to say anything about his future in Jacksonville.
