The Play That Killed Us

The defense played great yesterday, but we still have that unfortunate tendency to give up one or two big plays. The biggest play for Indianapolis was the long pass to Anthony Gonzalez that he then lateralled Randy Moss-style to Reggie Wayne for the near-touchdown (which was subsequently converted). What Tyrell Johnson was doing on that play I have no idea. Somehow he got sucked way up and Gonzalez just blew past him, and Cedric Griffin was himself in no position to do anything either. Gonazalez had a huge game for Indy overall, working almost exclusively against Cedric. Antoine Winfield got that pick early and Peyton Manning basically stayed away from him the rest of the game. Cedric needs to step up big or teams will just keep picking on him like that. I think there’s at least a small chance Charles Gordon could end up starting at cornerback next week with Cedric going to nickel. I’m anxious to see Madieu Williams finally get on the field – I like Tyrell Johnson’s talent but he’s over-matched as a starting safety right now. The only time you notice him is when he’s out-of-position on these big passing plays. He’s not really involved in the game otherwise.
