The Vikings defense will have to deal with something this Sunday that neither of the Panthers‘ previous two opponents had to face - Steve Smith. The All-World wide-out spent the first two weeks suspended after doing impromptu plastic surgery on the face of teammate Ken Lucas (who’d already had some work done and didn’t really appreciate the unrequested touch-up). Now Smith has rejoined the team, and I’m sure Carolina QB Jake Delhomme will be eager to get him the ball. In the meantime, the Panthers have had to develop some other offensive options. They seemed to find one in TE Dante Rosario, who caught 7 balls for 96 yards week 1 against San Diego – but then Rosario managed only 1 reception in their Week 2 win against the Bears. They also have old reliable Muhsin Muhammad back in the fold, and former Seahawk D.J. Hackett who’s off to a nice start. And of course one-time USC stud Dwayne Jarrett who is already 1/3 of the way to equaling his catch total from 2007 (not a great accomplishment as he caught only 6 balls in 7 games). Add Smith and you have a pretty formidable group. That’s assuming Steve can get through the next few days of practice without deciding to try out his pugilistic skills on one of his teammates. He has a lot of balled-up anger inside him I think. Must be a Napoleonic complex. Or maybe he’s just a flat-out dickhead.
