Daunte Culpepper‘s “retirement” came to a predictable end today with his announcement that he wants to play football some more and is mulling offers from various teams. “As much as I have enjoyed my brief break from playing, I know that I love the game and I have some unfinished business in the NFL,” said the former Viking QB. “It has never been because of a lack of passion for the game but rather, the absence of a fair opportunity to compete and play that caused me to retire. Now that there are some real opportunities that match my desire to play, I will choose the one that is the best fit for both the team and me so that I can continue my NFL career.” Translation: I got bored shitless playing with my kids plus I realized that sitting around all day doing nothing doesn’t pay that well. Now comes the inevitable talk of a reconciliation with the Vikings and a return to the field in purple. Let’s put it this way – does anyone think Gus Frerotte is a viable option past this year? Is Tarvaris Jackson a long-term solution? John David Booty? Could the Vikes maybe squeeze two or three decent years out of Culpepper?
Forget it. As long as Brad Childress is coach, Daunte will not be in purple. That bridge got burned and the rubble washed downstream to the ocean and was pulverized in a whirlpool. PFT suggests Denver as a possible destination and of course everyone will keep bringing up the Patriots and Daunte’s old pal Randy Moss. I say Lions.
