Torry Holt Asks for His Release from Rams

Could Torry Holt be the guy to make us forget our discontent over the lack of movement by the Vikings in the free agent market this off-season?  He’s certainly available.  The Rams have been trying to trade him for days, but there’s absolutely no market for him at all.  The frustration has only mounted for Holt who has now asked the team to outright cut him so he can make his own deal some place.  The Rams have until March 17th, the day he’s due a $1.25 million roster bonus, to figure out what they want to do.

Holt, at one point one of the best 5 receivers in the league without question, saw a precipitous drop-off in his production in 2008:  His 64 receptions and 796 yards were his lowest totals since his rookie season of 1999, and his 3 touchdowns were the fewest he has ever scored in a season.  Part of the issue was that the Rams simply stunk last year, but there’s also no doubt that Holt’s speed isn’t what it was before the knee injury that hampered him throughout 2007.

The Vikings need a possession receiver who can run accurate routes and make the tough catches over the middle, someone like Housh, Engram, maybe Holt.

If Holt gets released and we go after him, he better come cheap. If they spend more than 5 mil a year to bring him in i wont be pleased. We do need and WR though, and now that Sploush spurrned us and nate washington is gone that really leave’s Holt, Devery Henderson, Engram out there that i’d be content with adding

Uh oh T.O. just got released. Do we even consider bringing him to Minny ? We already know Chilly doesnt get along with him. But with the will to win now does Ziggy say go get him ???

TO would be great for the Vikes as long as they dont give him any guaranteed money and just release him the first time he opens his mouth.

I agree with mike, plus it would be good for sales and we all know this is a business all about making money.

To be honest I feel like it’s a tie between TO and TH. I think Holt has more left in the tank and this year will be the first year his knee is fully rehabbed, as we have seen with other players after knee surgery it takes two years so that first year back is always a little of a slump. I think TO probably has a bigger imediate upside as far as impact goes but holt is about three years younger so he has a lot more long term potential.

    lets get to

how about a qb we need a better one

  • Ryan

If you think we are getting TO you have completely lost your mind, of course Mike would suggest it.

i think we should give chilly the boot

Hey Ryan, Steve Wyche, Senior Writer of NFL.com wrote an article today “Vikings could be one of just a few teams willing to pick up Owens.”

If you sign T.O., make it 1 or 2 years with a laden incentive contract with bonuses based on production and conduct. He is going to have to shut up and humble himself and take less money do to his age and the market for teams wanting him being extremely thin to none.  As far as holt, he said on NFL.com that he wants to play for Carolina, his hometown. I would love to have him but the question is would he want to play for the Vikings? Has their been any rumors or leaks suggesting Tory would sign with us?

Every time these big name free agents are mentioned on the Vikings web page as possibly playing in Minnesota this year, it seems like the very next day, they sign with another team. What is so bad about playing in Minnesota?

  • Mike

Because the Vikings have no QB to lead them.
