Jeff George Won't Let it Go

Jeff George is 41 years old, and hasn’t thrown a pass in the NFL since 2001, when he played all of two games for the Redskins.  By all reasonable measures the dude is finished, kaput, over.  Nevertheless, Jeff won’t give up his dream of getting one last chance to prove himself.  And he won’t let the Vikings and Brad Childress forget about what he thinks they could’ve had if they’d only given him that shot.  George told Yahoo! Sports:

If I was in Minnesota, I guarantee I’d be wearing a ring right now. I just can’t get over why somebody like Brad Childress wouldn’t take a look at me and have me as the third guy on their roster. Put me in and I’ll pick up right where I left off in ’99, but this time with Adrian Peterson, so I wouldn’t have to throw it nearly as much.

There are a lot of things to criticize Chilly for, but one thing he’s done right is laugh off Jeff George.  Laugh is the only thing you can do with this guy.  Same with Daunte Culpepper.  Yeah, both did great things for the Vikings – George in a very limited stint – but the past is the past.  I know that.  Chilly knows that.  The only ones who don’t know it are Jeff and Daunte.

woohoo, I’m on the viking age. yay!

  • danzinski

Feel free to leave any time.

You can’t blame Jeff George for thinking he can beat out T-Joke, Rosencopter and John Wilkes Booty.  The Vikings QB situation that Chilly has created is the real joke, except I’m not laughing.  I don’t see a problem with having tryouts for all comers.

Mike, you might as well throw in Joe Kapp,Rich Gannon and Wade Wilson, or maybe Jim McMahon, heck anyone is better than T-Jack right now. Let’s throw all the names in the hat and give em’ all a chance.

  • Chris

Jeff George was only good cus of Moss! what makes him think AP will help him? lol

  • Ryan

and Cris Carter and one of the best o-line’s in the history of the league

  • Mike

Chris, I’m sure what makes Jeff George (and also Brett Favre) say AP will help them is that it should be relatively easy to find receivers when defenses put 8 and 9 in the box to try to stop AP.  The trick is for the QB to be able to read defenses and handle the blitz that necessarily must follow a defense loading the box.  To Chilly’s disgrace he has not even found a QB that can do that and the result is forcing AP to smash into loaded boxes and jeopardizing his health.  But another problem is the lack of a short yardage possession WR and fullback that can serve as quick outlets and the lack of time given by weak link in the offensive line, Ryan Cook at right tackle.

  • Ryan

So you would rather have Jeff George then Sage Rosenfels?

mike hit it right on the nail head. good points mike. this is why jackson has not succeeded in your offense. he can’t read the defenses. this is why i think a guy like rosenfels will succeed. rosey has played in a pro style off. in iowa state, and in the pro teams he’s been with, they have struggled to run the ball effectively, thus having to learn to read zones quickly because your’re relying on the pass and having to move the ball thru the air. having andre johnson does’nt hurt either. but none the less, sage knows how to read Ds and can move the ball thru the air. he was very successful with kevin walter, a possesion type wr and johnson, who bereian resembles? and you put a line like minny has, something he never had at houston, with AP? now you got weapons and time to read the field………he’ll get it done, cause he CAN read……..jackson, well, can he read at all, much less a D??? i’ve heard that jackson’s wonderlic scores were’nt the best. look at what happened to vince young. athletic skills does not make up for being a student of the game. rosey is very intelligent.

  • Mike

Ryan, you want me to say who I really want so you can pull out your poddy mouth again.  OK, BRETT FAVRE!!!!!!

when i hear of jeff george i think of one thing. what jimmy johnson said about him. i consider jimmy johnson one of the greatest evaluators of talent ever in the nfl. his record speaks for it’s self in the dynasty he built in dallas in a 5 year span. he compared george to troy aikman. he said that george had all the skills to be one of the greatest qb’s ever. he said that george had one of the quickest releases like aikman or marino. he was extremely acturate, and had a cannon to get it down field. he was very intelligent to read Ds and pick up where blitzes were coming from. he had fire and was a good leader. the problem was he was always in the wrong system. johnson said what made aikman great was emmitt smith. what made elway great was terrell davis. he tried to do the same with marino in miami, but marino was set in his ways with the past and shula that he  could’nt except change. thus letting marino retire……what would have made george great was a great rb to combo with. he had to do it himself and thus what came out of george was a self reliance on his abilities and he forced the ball to try to win on his arm. he was impropperly coached in so doing and became uncoachable in his reputation. johnson said if i would have had him he would have succedded. anyone gonna argue with jimmy johnson.?

  • http://landryhat davedallasfan

i think this is precisely the point of george’s comments. he knows what johnson said is true as well. give a guy like george a line and AP and he’ll win. this is what can make rosenfels take the next step as well. rosey has the brain to play qb. maybe jackson is a step away from having that yet. he may posses the skills, but the ability to know when to USE those skills he still does not have or may never get. thats what people see in judging the leadership of a qb.

  • Mike

Dave, yes Chris Carter laughs at T-Joke because he can’t read defenses and handle the blitz.  Frerotte seemed a little better but still often looked like a deer in head lights under pressure. TV commentators talk about Kurt Warner having the #1 rating against the blitz but I have only seen article about it on the web – Brady, Manning and Favre were the highest and T-Joke, Garcia and Vince Young were the lowest.   I have never seen Rosencopters rating against the blitz but I guess we will find out.   The Vikings really need proven experience at reading defenses and not the younger traits like athletic ability because they rely on AP.  Jeff George actually makes some good points by saying he wouldn’t have to pass much so maybe he should be the one laughing at Chilly!

  • http://landryhat davedallasfan

i agree, you put even a 41 year old george on THAT team and he could succeed. i agree with you whole heartitly about farve with this team. he would eat it up. that was the thing about george’s comments; he say whats the problem here? anyone with some good qb instincts should be able to win with this squad, or is it the lack of coaching?????????

  • http://landryhat davedallasfan

and warner had faulk with a great passing attack. faulk took the pressure off. and gave warner the time. with AZ warner has just got flat out the best wr tandem in the nfl. thats why he want boldin back so bad. he’s a good qb that can read and do it quickly. thats what martz seen in him and exploited it to the fullest. you gotta find a guy with those skills and then mold them. george was the biggest waste of talent ever, and according to johnson, who’s fault was it? well then we got to look to chilly, the supposeded qb guru. does he really have what it takes to develop a qb???? we’ll see as you said. good disscussion, thank you.

OH and by the way did any of you hear the rumors of bills owner ralph wilson passing away? well i guess they were just rumors, but if it were the case, the family will sell the franchise imeditely to the highest bidder. my guess it won’t be anyone from buffalo NY, maybe L.A. ???????

  • Mike

Lou Saban. not Ralph Wilson, died.

  • http://landryhat davedallasfan

yes this news was reported on the buffalo low down fansided blog. tim was the one that reported about the wilson family ready to sell the bills if and when ralph wilson passes. he has been sick lately and missed the owners meetings in dana ca. there has been talk of the buffalo organization eventually moving to monteral ?canada if the team was to be sold. some businessmen in canada are making a play for them now, but i think the nfl would block that if they could transplant them to la instead?
