7 Days of Draftsmas: Phil Loadholt a First-Rounder?

Mining for news, rumors, speculation, anything Vikings draft related has become a little like looking for a sober Packer fan:  a seeming exercise in futility.  I did however manage to churn up one bit of opinion, from Sirus radio’s Gil Brandt via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, touching on possible Vikings draft target Phil Loadholt.  According to Mr. Brandt, Loadholt, who has been rated as a 1st/2nd round tweener by most scouting reports, will get snapped up by someone in the first round.  In other words, the Vikings may be looking at working a trade with someone in the bottom end of the first round, rather than the top end of the second round, if it is indeed their intention to slide a few spots and take Loadholt.  The scuttlebutt, by the way, is that the Vikes are still furiously debating taking a right tackle or a wide receiver.  But I stand by my completely unfounded conviction that Loadholt is their man.

No team is offering a 1 and a 3 for Boldin. The Vikings should offer less. They could offer their first 3 picks to AZ for Boldin and their #31 in the first round (that they could use to get Loadholt).  Both WR and RT would be solved.

I have my concerns about Loadholt.  I checked out Brian Orakpo’s draft highlights and the Texas DE and likely top-15 pick appeared to run through and around Loadholt during head-to-head matchups.  Orakpo might end up in Green Bay.  This was when Loadholt was playing LT.  Perhaps he will be better on the right side.

I’m a huge vikngs fan from York,  PA. I went to school with DE C. Doleman the last successful #1 from william penn H.S.. Loadholt doesn’t thrill me and Harvin, though talented is probably offthe vikes lst due to character issue. I say we trade down, maybe to 27th [IND] who could use a OLB. Then draft OT William Beatty [CONN] at 27 pick up extra 2nd [61].  Or we could trade down again to #34 [N.E.] Get Beatty and extra #3 [89] then draft at
#54 WR/QB P. White,  #61  CB D.J.Moore  #86 WR Deon Butler and #89 DT Fili  Moala.  W. Beatty has outstanding character.  see                                 http://ydr.inyork.com/ci_12120474?IADID=Search-ydr.inyork.com-ydr.inyork.com

The Vikings don’t have the same probability to get a pro bowl RT or WR at #22, that Green Bay does at #9 with  Brian Orakpo.  All of the RTs have problems including Britton (short arms), Loadholt (slowness) and Beatty (unexcited).  But they are all likely better than Marcus Johnson, Ryan Cook or anything else the Vikings could get with their second pick this year at #54.

  • Mike

The Vikings should make an offer for Boldin.  The Cardinals have received inquiries but no offers and now there has been talk the Cardinals could be dropping their asking price.  Even Baltimore won’t give them a 1 and 3.  I just don’t trust the WRs in the draft to develop fast enough, if at all.
