McShay Breaks Down NFC North Draft Picks

Likes what the Lions did, loves the Packers‘ picks (yeah yeah), so-so on the Bears, digs the Vikings taking Percy Harvin and Phil Loadholt.  However, uh…Brad Childress has a great offensive mind?  That’s why he’s been here since 2006 and the Vikings continue to languish in the lower reaches of the offensive rankings?  And yeah, I know, they scored a lot more points last year.  Thanks to their defense and that stretch where Gus Frerotte played well.  I’m not saying the Vikes can’t develop into a great offensive team under Chilly, I’m just saying, it hasn’t happened yet, so let’s cool it on proclaiming him a genius.

NFL.com’s Gil Brandt just said on his question and answer session:  “I think Minnesota’s offense was upgraded as much as anyone’s. Percy Harvin has a chance to be rookie of the year on offense, and second-round OL Phil Loadholt could be a starter and a considerable help. “

NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks gave the risky Vikings and Lions the worst draft grades in the division:    “The Vikings’ draft strategy appears sound and solid, as the team took the best available player in each round.   However, the grade ultimately hinges on the overall success of the Harvin selection.   If the talented playmaker can avoid trouble and provide the big plays that everyone expects, the Vikings will be applauded for masterful management of the risk/reward factor.  If it doesn’t work out, not only will the Vikings be subject to ridicule, but the head coach gambling on the pick will likely lose his job.”
