Antoine Winfield Tries Out His Foot

A day after they gained a half-game on both the Bears and Packers, the good news just keeps on coming for the Vikings.  This afternoon, it was reported that Antoine Winfield got on the practice field to test his injured foot, in hopes he will be able to start at cornerback this Sunday against the Lions.

This is not only good news for the Vikings defense, it is great news.  The secondary has been shaky at best without Winfield, who is both the team’s best cover corner and its best run support guy among the DBs.  Winfield’s healthy return would buttress a unit that has been a source of great concern for Vikings coaches and fans the last few weeks.

I’m sure Antoine himself is champing at the bit to get back out…especially knowing that, if he makes it back for this weekend, he will be facing Matthew Stafford, who threw five picks in yesterday’s loss to the lowly Seahawks.

Then again, considering what a dogcrap team the Lions are, maybe the Vikes would be better off letting Antoine rest for one more week.  We can endure one more week of Karl Paymah and Asher Allen, if it means Antoine comes back even stronger.

I would rather delay his coming back in order to minimize the risk of injury before we get to the playoffs..and, the risk of losing to Detroit and others in the next few games without Winfield is in my view, pretty low. If you watch the 2008 Minnesota victory over New Orleans in a big MNF game Wifield is incredible in that big game…let’s let Asher et al get better in low risk games.

C’mon Danz, ease up on Allen and Paymah. Winfield will return when he’s ready, but the others have filled in for him since, and we’re still winning, which is the important thing. Once Winfield returns, our Defense will be a force to reckon with, but i agree with Bob, let these two guys get some playing time under their belts, should any other injuries happen down the line, these guys will be ready to fill in. Oh, and by the way, i like Benny Saap, he’s over aggressive at times, but he fires up the defense, sort of like Joey Browner use to do, but Benny lacks Browners’ talent, that’s for sure, but makes up for it with tenacity.
