The Vikings‘ domination of the NFC Pro Bowl roster has gone from impressive to downright embarrassing.
Eight seemed like enough, until Percy Harvin was added as the kick returner. Nine then seemed plenty…until today’s announcement that Antoine Winfield has been elevated from alternate to reserve, a move necessitated by the injury to Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the Cardinals‘ playoff loss to the Saints.
For those scoring at home, that gives the Vikings 10 Pro Bowlers.
Winfield gets the nod despite missing six games with a bad foot, and not exactly playing up to his usual high level after he returned.
Given the state of Winfield’s health, it seems doubtful that he would show up to play the exhibition in Miami, meaning someone else will likely end up with his slot. Of course, that consideration would be rendered moot if the Vikings prevail over the Saints this weekend. The two Super Bowl bound teams will not be sending any players to the Pro Bowl, now that it’s scheduled to take place the week between the conference title games and the championship clash.
I’m sure Antoine is flattered to receive this honor, and I’m also sure he is rooting very, very hard to be replaced.
