LaDainian Tomlinson Visits, Moves on

LaDainian Tomlinson has visited Minnesota, heard what Brad Childress and Zygi Wilf and Rick Spielman had to say…and gone on to New York to sit down with Rex Ryan and the Jets.

If Tomlinson is looking for touches, New York would probably be the better destination.  If he’s looking for a chance to win a championship?

The conventional wisdom is that Minnesota would afford him the better opportunity to taste Super Bowl glory.  On the assumption that That Guy and not Tarvaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels or Tim Tebow would be starting at quarterback.

It would be interesting to know what Chilly told Tomlinson about the That Guy situation.  Did he assure LT that TG will indeed be behind center in 2010?  Or did he have to confess that even he doesn’t know?

One thing we know Chilly told Tomlinson:  if he does join the Purple, he will be the #2 back behind Adrian Peterson.

Actually, make that the #1A back.

Chilly already backpedaling on his Adrian Peterson is the man in Minnesota talk, to make Tomlinson more comfortable.  They really want this guy bad.  They know they need to replace Chester Taylor, and they know there’s no one else out there who can give them anything close to Chester’s production.

It’s LT or bad news for the Vikings.

Let’s hope yesterday’s presentation impressed him.  He certainly had enough fuss made about him in the media.  If he likes silly attention from newspaper reporters – for instance, endless Twitter updates about his limo – he should love Minneapolis.

Jets, not Vikes are the better SuperBowl option.
Jets did what they did last year with a rookie QB, rookie coach, new defensive playbook and thier AllPro Nost Tackle and AllPro 3rd down back out with injury..
2010 we have a more experienced coach and QB, and a D that got better each game as they learned the new playbook , and Jenkins and Washington back.
How have Vikes improved? They are still good, but Jets IMHO have a bigger upside.

Disagree again. LT had a pedestrian 3.3 yards per carry last year compared to 4.5 for Westbrook. Westbrook offers more and he will play for the Vikes even if the Vikings aren’t smart enough to know it yet.

  • Mike

The Jets are nuts!!! They are offering LT even more money than Kansas City gave Thomas Jones: $5 million over two years plus incentives. Thomas Jones is obviously the better player, over 1400 yards last year and 4.2 yards per carry compared to 3.3 for LT. Can you say TJ Housh all over again?

  • SouthernJet

More money for LT than JOnes because Greene beat out Jones. Jones cant do 3rd down passes option. With Leon Washington coming off injury, Jets dont need another banger, but needed insurance for a 3rd down back, hence the LT offer. LT is viewed as 3rd down option , not a Jones replacement.

  • Mike

I didn’t say LT was viewed as a replacement for Jones -just that I wouldn’t pay him as much. And most commentators agree. The Jets, like Chicago for Chester Taylor, are too desperate. The Vikings should pass again. Especially since LT has even less left than Chester Taylor.

  • SouthernJet

LT worth more than Jones to Jets so he should get more. Jones has no value to Jets since he lost #1 job. LT would be possible #1 3rd down back and possible backup if needed. All Jones could do now for Jets would be a backup.

  • Mike

I don’t care about the relative value of LT and TJ to the Jets. Just saying LT is not worth what TJ got from KC – for anybody. The Vikings also need LT more than TJ, but they should let the Jets eat their overpriced bid.

The National Post’s Matt Bowen says Leon Washington is better out of the backfield than Tomlinson.

  • SouthernJet

Leon is better out of backfield when 100%.
He broke his leg in 2 pieces. LT is insurance in case Leon isnt 100%.

Danzinski making fun of a reporter for doing a good job covering the Vikings… now that is ironic.

Chilly should sign his own WCO guys, like Westbrook.

LT likes his potential role with the Jets and especially the idea of being reunited with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who was quarterbacks coach in San Diego while Tomlinson was tearing up the NFL. The Jets like Tomlinson’s leadership ability and feel he can be a mentor to second-year running back Shonn Greene.

Moreover, Greene doesn’t appear ready to withstand the pounding of a 16-game schedule after slowed by ankle and rib injuries after only 108 carries in the regular season. So why did they get rid of Thomas Jones?

  • Mike

Maybe they think LT can withstand the other 200 carries. Good luck with that!

  • Mike

Closes source to LT say he will be a Jet. Good riddance!

Can we go after Westbrook now???

    Thanks again for nothing Spielman!
