Brett Favre Tells the Vikings He’s Not Coming Back

The day many a Vikings fan has dreaded may have arrived.

According to a tweet by the Star-Trib’s Judd Zulgad, Brett Favre told Vikings officials Monday night that he is not coming back for 2010.

“Favre is expected to issue a press release later today. Keep in mind this is Brett Favre and it is Aug. 3,” Zulgad went onAdded the Vikings’ lead reporter, “I”m told Favre has said his ankle has simply not responded and that is why he won’t be back.”

Then came perhaps the most interesting of Zulgad’s tweets:  “There is a chance ownership will go back to Favre with an offer of more than the 13 million for this season.”

Ah.  So is the ankle really the issue with Favre or is he actually doing this to get more money?

We’ll have to wait and see what it says in the press release.  But, as of this moment, it appears the Vikings will begin the 2010 season with Tarvaris Jackson at quarterback.

All I can say is, thank goodness they didn’t trade Sage Rosenfels.

Update: Jay Glazer tweets, “Favre has told teammates he will NOT play this season, citing wear and tear on his body. Team is hoping he will change his mind.”

Adam Schefter reports that Favre has sent text messages to teammates telling them he is done.
