Vikings Open Preseason With Depleted Squad

The first game of preseason is no time to take chances with guys who might not be 100% healthy.  Hence the Vikings‘ decision to sit down many of their offensive and defensive regulars for tonight’s game vs. the Rams.

Sidney Rice and Cedric Griffin were obvious scratches, given that both are on the PUP list.  Ditto Percy Harvin who has missed most of camp for various reasons.

A less predictable addition to the list of inactive players was Visanthe Shiancoe, who didn’t even make the trip with the team.  Shiancoe did miss some practice time toward the end of camp, and obviously he is not all the way well.

Another important offensive cog, Adrian Peterson, did suit up for the game, but did not take the field with the first team.  The same was the case for E.J. Henderson, who is still fighting his way back from that awful broken leg suffered last season.

Albert Young got the start at running back, while Jasper Brinkley took Henderson’s place.

John Sullivan also sat, giving Jon Cooper a chance to start at center.

Oh, and I forgot to mention one other guy:  Brett Favre.

Shockingly, #4 did not show up for this ever-so-vital preseason contest.  I’m sure he’ll be there for the next one though.
