It’s been a day of shake-ups for the Vikings‘ roster. The most exciting news, at least from a fan obsession point-of-view, was the activation of Joe Webb for the first time all season. Webb saw early action on a kick-off return and as a wide-out.
More intriguing than Webb’s activation and insertion on an emergency basis, however, was the unexpected benching of Madieu Williams. The highly-paid Williams had been a starter since his signing, but today, Husain Abdullah and Tyrell Johnson were the safeties for the Vikings when the game began.
Interestingly, Tom Pelissero tweeted before the game that one pro scout called Johnson the Vikings’ “best safety” and wondered aloud why he wasn’t playing. I’m skeptical that Johnson actually is that good a player, but it is interesting that with Brad Childress gone and Leslie Frazier in charge, Williams has been demoted.
Update: Williams entered the game in the second series. It seems his benching was a disciplinary move and not a promotion for Tyrell Johnson.
