The trade was bad. Herschel was not bad. We never used the guy properly. Dallas didn't seem to have a problem getting him to produce.

We got Herschel Walker in trade and then underutilized him. Walker never averaged 20 or above carries a game with Minnesota. Can you believe that? In fact, Walker never got the ball from any team twenty times or more a game except for in Dallas in 1988 when he averaged 22.6 attempts a game and it produced his best year of 1514 yards. You could say that he was the most underutilized talent the league has ever seen. He was clearly a back that got better as he was fed the ball and wore down defenses and he was being marginalized by a Burgess Merideth look alike-Jerry Burns.

Here are his average carries a game by year in Minnesota:

1989-15.4
1990-11.5-I had to look twice at that number; unreal!
1991-13.2

Is that any way to use a guy who you bet the farm on?
In 1991 he was traded to Philly where he was given 16.7 attempts a game and produced a 1070 yard season. After that Philly went to a two-headed running game and Walker never got the carries he deserved.

The trade makes me want to puke until this day, but so does the fact that we didn't even bother to use the guy we traded for after paying so much for him.
