The Vikings have thrown draft watchers another curveball. A day after surprising many by taking Christian Ponder #12 overall, Minnesota made TE Kyle Rudolph their second round selection.
TE was not a huge need for the Vikings, despite an aging TE corps and the fact that Visanthe Shiancoe will be a free agent after 2011, but Rudolph was arguably the best player available on the board when the Vikings came up, and Bill Musgrave is known to favor a two-TE offensive approach.
Among the players the Vikings could’ve taken was DE Da’Quan Bowers, who has now slipped from the top 10 all the way into the middle of the second round because of a knee issue. The Vikings were reportedly looking at Bowers at 12 but passed on him because of the physical issue. Other possibilities included safety Rahim Moore and o-lineman Ben Ijalana.
The Rudolph pick is sure to be controversial, just like the Ponder pick. Say what you want about Rick Spielman – he keeps us on our toes.
