You probably didn’t need more proof that the NFL is by far the world’s dominant sports league, at least in terms of revenue, but here it is anyway:
Of the 50 most valuable sports franchises on planet earth according to Forbes, 32 are NFL teams. As you know, there are only 32 teams in the entire NFL. That means every single franchise in the NFL is in the top 50 when it comes to value. That’s top 50 in the entire world.
The Vikings placed 41st on the Forbes most valuable franchises list with an estimated worth of $774 million. This despite a stadium situation that can only be described as unsettled. Keep in mind that the Vikes are just 30th in value in the NFL, ahead of only the Raiders and Jaguars.
30th in value in their league, and 41st in the entire world. The Vikings are worth more than the Lakers, Knicks or Phillies. It’s safe to say there is currently an insane amount of money in the NFL.
Giant TV contracts are the main reason NFL teams are valued so highly. And when the current TV deals expire, the new deals will only push those numbers higher.
And that kids is why we’re currently in a lockout. When the situation is resolved, players hope to have a bigger chunk of that ever-more-gigantic pie. And the fans? They just want their football. And perhaps a couple of beers.
