Adrian Peterson is a man of his word. He said he’d show up for training camp on-time and he did – although it was close. According to dispatches from Winter Park Peterson pulled up in his Escalade just as the media were leaving the premises, or about five minutes before the deadline for players to report. I’m guessing Peterson alerted the Vikings ahead of time of his intention to sneak in under the wire and avoid having to answer questions about his contract situation. The timing isn’t important anyway, what matters is that AD is in camp. There will be no hold out.
There will be a contract negotiation between the Vikings and Peterson at some point in the near future, a negotiation that will likely lead to Peterson getting more guaranteed money than DeAngelo Williams who just got $21 million. The hope on the Vikings’ side I think is to get those talks going soon and knock down Peterson’s cap number for 2011, giving them some wiggle room ahead of Thursday when teams must be under the cap.
They also hope to negotiate a long-term deal with Chad Greenway, and in the process bring down his cap number for the year. As I said, this all has to be done by Thursday or the Vikings will be over the cap with the league year starting, which I’m told would cause lasers to shoot from Roger Goodell‘s eyes into Zygi Wilf‘s brain, melting it from the inside. Or something like that.
