Rhett Bomar Arrested For Drunken Driving

Vikings quarterback Rhett Bomar was arrested very early this morning for drunken driving in Mankato. He was taken to jail and released several hours later.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Bomar, his story is one where the hype has forever been stronger than the product. Rewinding the clock to his senior year of high school in 2004 he was the top rated high school quarterback in the country and had numerous offers before deciding to go to Oklahoma. During his Sooner years however he violated NCAA rules accepting money from a car dealership that he actually did not work for, which was violation of NCAA rules and he was essentially forced to leave Oklahoma. The next year he transferred to Sam Houston State. The results were at best mediocre considering his talent at the position. The New York Giants took a flyer on Bomar in the 5th round of the 2009 draft; he spent time on the practice squad before being signed away by the Vikings when Brett Favre went down with an injury last season. Early vibe on Bomar last year was that he possessed a lively arm and would be looked at toward the future at the quarterback position.

And now, sadly, comes another squandered opportunity by Bomar. While it was a major uphill climb to make the roster buried behind Donovan McNabb, Christian Ponder and Joe Webb; he still could have made a good impression during camp and preseason to catch some NFL eyes. But with a drunken driving arrest Bomar’s fate is perhaps already sealed. He may resurface in Canada or another professional league. Beyond football however, lets just hope this is Bomar’s last mishap and his life can find some sense of direction.
