Lost in the shuffle of preseason is one glaring thing no other blogger or Vikings media head has touched on that is deserving of a blog post. Defensive tackle Pat Williams, formerly one half of the fabled Williams Wall, is currently unemployed.
Phat Pat not having a team comes as a bit of a surprise. It’s understandable he’s not back with the Vikings after running his mouth after least season as his contract ran out and the fact we signed Remi Ayodele, but you’d think at least some team that runs a 4-3 defense would be now have him on their roster.
While Phat Pat has never offered anything as a pass rusher, he did grade out as a decent defensive tackle stopping the run in 2010. Phat Pat still ties up linemen that helps free up other defenders. He still has know-how of tackling running backs whether it’s stuffing them at the line or even chasing them down. All of this at the ripe age of 38.
But 38 years old and likely facing a two game suspension are the reasons why no team has put in an offer to sign Phat Pat. Very little has surfaced of teams even having him in for a visit so far. At this stage its likely waiting for a DT to get injured or eventually facing the fate of filing retirement papers. Would hate to see it end this way, but all good things must come to an end sooner or later.
