We don’t have to wait for Wednesday to find out who will start Sunday for the Vikings against the Packers. Jason La Canfora has broken the news: it will be Christian Ponder. La Canfora tweets, “Vikings are changing QBs. Leslie Frazier has made the change and notified those involved. Christian Ponder takes over as starter.”
And so as it turns out, the Christian Ponder era did begin Sunday night in the fourth quarter against the Bears. Leslie Frazier is clearly not afraid of Ponder’s confidence taking a hit. If we are to take Frazier at his word, this move is not being made to prepare Ponder for 2012 but is happening because the coaches believe the rookie gives the Vikings the best chance to win. That’s as much an indictment of Donovan McNabb as it is an endorsement of Ponder.
And what happens with McNabb now? How will he handle his second benching in as many seasons? Will he pout or will he take to the mentor role with Obi Wan-like aplomb? It wouldn’t be the Vikings without drama.
