NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reported today that Vikings quarterback Donovan McNabb wasn’t exactly a model player. Per Lombardi, McNabb would show up late for meetings and wouldn’t put the time in to being an NFL starter. Lombardi also stated this played a major role in McNabb’s benching and giving the car keys to Christian Ponder.
This should come as no surprise to Vikings fans after McNabb’s horrific year in Washington last year, stories in the past of struggling with his weight and simply the fact that he’s on his 3rd team in as many years. Lombardi also reports that McNabb has struggled to learn the Vikings offense and has needed to wear a wristband citing the plays.
So it begs the question of what’s ahead for McNabb for the remainder of the year? He has a history of saying all the right things to the media (like how he’ll mentor Ponder), but multiple behind the scenes stories over the years leave us to wonder if he’s a guy you want in the locker room for the games most important position. Maybe McNabb would be best to pull the plug now and shine up his resume for the broadcast booth. Whatever comes, this is Ponder’s team now. Oh and he doesn’t need a wristband.
