According to one of the best insiders in the biz, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, former Vikings coach Brad Childress will interview for some sort of Tampa Bay Buccaneers coaching job.
No need to get into a big rehash of the Brad Childress era with the Vikings, however this is compelling for a couple of different reasons. First of all, Childress has always had the desire to coach. Last year in interviews he stated it was his first year in over 30 years not being on an NFL or college sidelines and struggled in doing so. Secondly, when fired by the Vikings he was given a $5 million severance package that runs though the 2012 season. In the event that Childress gets another coaching job, that severance goes away.
The Bucs are also interviewing former coaches Marty Schottenheimer, Mike Zimmer and Wade Phillips; therefore it’d be naïve of us to expect a hiring within the next couple of days. For Vikings sake however, lets hope Chilly gets some sort of job with the Bucs or another organization. That’d save Zygi Wilf and Co some cash to allocate towards a new stadium or player personnel. I’d love to write more about how Chilly could screw the Bucs up and get a good joke about how they’re in the same conference as the Vikings, but I’m not going to chastise someone who has the desire to keep working when they could be sitting on the couch earning millions. Plus when it comes to ripping Chilly — nobody does it better than Dan Zinski.
