Vikings Sign John Carlson For 5 Years, $25 Million

The Vikings are batting 1.000 this free agency season. They’ve had one guy in for a visit, and they signed that guy. John Carlson gets a 5 year, $25 million deal from the Vikes. He slides in as the #2 tight end alongside fellow Notre Dame alum Kyle Rudolph. The story on Carlson is, good catchy, so-so blocky. He missed all of 2011 with a torn labrum but no one’s worried about that. Carlson’s arrival means the departure of Visanthe Shiancoe who has already lined up visits with multiple teams and should have a new home soon.

Okay so it’s not the big splashy signing some wanted the Vikes to make but Carlson looks like a solid player and we know the Vikings need plenty of tight ends with their offensive system. Rick Spielman may be off to a cautious start in his first free agency period as GM but he appears to have made a good move here.
