Redskins Sign Cedric Griffin to 1-Year Contract

Cedric Griffin is officially a former Viking after signing a 1-year deal with the Washington Redskins. Josina Anderson says the contract will be worth “a max of $2.5 million” suggesting it is laden with incentives. The Vikings were believed to be interested in bringing Griffin back after cutting him but the interest was likely not mutual. Griffin made it pretty clear that he wanted no part of Minnesota anymore after being benched late in the season for ineffectiveness.

It will be interesting to see what role Griffin fills in Washington. I can’t see him as a starting cornerback anymore with his gimpy knees and to be honest I don’t think he even makes sense as a nickel guy. The Redskins are just taking a flyer on him by giving him an incentive heavy deal. For Griffin to earn that max money he’ll have to play a lot better than he did with the Vikings in 2011. He was flat out terrible at times last year and only showed life late in the season when he was ticked off and the Vikings were playing bad teams.
