With Kenny Onatolu moving on to wherever he moved on (Carolina actually), the Vikings had themselves a little bit of a hole at back-up linebacker and in their return coverage units. Notice how I said “had” themselves a hole. That hole’s not there anymore, because on Tuesday they signed linebacker and special teams guy Marvin Mitchell.
Hold on for this next tidbits kids: Marvin Mitchell used to play for the Saints. He was on the Saints the year they cheated the Vikings out of a Super Bowl berth. He probably was offered bounties on someone but being a back-up linebacker never got a chance to cash in. Still, in his heart, he wanted to be paid extra for ripping some guy’s head off and mailing it to Gregg Williams. Does this mean we have to hate him?
The Saints didn’t think enough of Mitchell to keep him around after the 2010 season so he moved on to Miami. In one year with the Dolphins – that would be last year – Mitchell amassed 30 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, an INT and 2 passes defensed. Maybe there’s some coverage skill there? Actually he’s perceived as more of a run stopping linebacker according to what I’ve seen. But he’s played the middle some so, maybe he can compete with Jasper Brinkley?
