We knew the Vikings might be in the market for a kicker because they visited with Greg Zuerlein. But they lost the chance to draft Zuerlein when the Rams took him off the board first in the sixth. So naturally the Vikings did what any sane organization would do in that situation. They took the next kicker on their chart. Who happened to be Blair Walsh of Georgia.
There seems to be a pattern emerging here. In each round the Vikings have a position identified. They have a list of players for each position. If the first guy gets taken they take the second guy. And if he’s gone they take the third, etc., This might be fine when it comes to filling needs, but it makes a mockery of the whole concept of draft value.
After several reaches, Rick Spielman is danger of being run out of town on a rail. I’m sure the hysteria will quiet down in a couple of weeks. And if not? The Vikings can always quiet the critics by having Adrian Peterson run some wind sprints.
