Vikings Make First Cuts; Solomon Elimimian, Bryan Walters Gone

Teams aren’t required to cut their rosters from 90 to 75 until Monday but the Vikings decided not to wait that long. On Saturday they announced their first 15 cuts and none of them are especially surprising. The first fifteen to go are:

G Bridger Buche
RB Derrick Coleman
G Grant Cook
LB Solomon Elimimian
DB Corey Gatewood
OT Levi Horn
DT Anthony Jacobs
WR Kamar Jorden
WR AJ Love
LB Tyler Nielsen
DE Ernest Owusu
DT Tydreke Powell
DB Chris Stroud
WR Kerry Taylor
WR Bryan Walters

The Vikes must trim their roster from 75 to 53 by 8 PM CT on August 31. That’s where the real tough choices will be made. Second and third teamers hoping to stick will have one more preseason game in which to prove themselves. Injuries to some key players especially in the secondary  could potentially open up a couple more spots than we originally anticipated there being. For instance, with Josh Robinson suffering an apparent concussion, a guy like Reggie Jones could score a spot on the 53. And if John Carlson can’t make it back for the season, that would open a spot for Mickey Shuler. If Geoff Schwartz continues to struggle after sports hernia surgery, maybe Patrick Brown makes it.

Lots of decisions for Rick Spielman, Leslie Frazier and company to mull over.
