Unspeakably horrible report coming out of Kansas City today. This morning a player now confirmed to be linebacker Jovan Belcher walked into the Chiefs’ practice facility and shot himself in the head. Further reports say Belcher murdered his girlfriend before killing himself. One account of the incident says Belcher was confronted by coaches at the facility and shot himself right in front of them. To add an extra layer of horror to the whole thing, Belcher and his girlfriend just had a baby.
Not that such things should even matter at a time like this, but the NFL has reportedly told the Chiefs’ Sunday opponent the Carolina Panthers that the game is on and they should travel to Kansas City as planned. It’s possible the game may be postponed between now and then and this probably would be the proper thing to do in light of this morning’s events.
A four-year veteran, Belcher played his college ball in Maine and was signed by the Chiefs in 2009 after going undrafted.
