Former Viking Love Boater Fred Smoot Arrested for DUI

Is there a former Viking who is more universally reviled than Fred Smoot? I can’t think of anyone. Maybe Bryant McKinnie. But let’s be honest about McKinnie. As much as we came to dislike him, he was a pretty good player in Minnesota for a lot of years. He was never as good as his talent suggested he should be, but still, he was a solid player. Yes he was involved in the Love Boat fiasco. But the stain of Love Boat never really stuck to him. Not like it stuck to Smoot. When it was over, Smoot was the one guy who suffered most from Love Boat. And that was largely a function of what he did – or didn’t do – on the field. That Carolina game when Steve Smith totally destroyed him? Who can forget that. Worst free agent bust in Vikings history. Yes, way worse than John Carlson.

So yes, Viking fans have valid reasons to despise Fred Smoot. He was a big talker who never backed it up on the field. He was a free agent bust. He was involved in a sex scandal that disgraced the team. Viking fans, think about how much you hate this guy. And now read this story about what happened to him on December 30th. Smoot was arrested in D.C. for DUI. Cops pulled him over because his vehicle lacked tags. Why was he drunk? He told the cops he had fought with his girlfriend at a club and was upset. Here’s the part that could have Viking fans rolling in the aisles with laughter:

"“During processing, in the service area, while handcuffed, the [defendant] peed his pants creating a puddle on the floor,” [officer Seth] Carll said in the affidavit. “[A police officer] witnessed the urine running down his pant leg and onto the floor. [Smoot] did not express that he had to use the restroom.”"

It’s not right to revel in another man’s agony. Unless that man is Fred Smoot. And he just peed down his leg while being booked for DUI.
