Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net passes along this little nugget about the Vikings’ search for a new #2 QB.”FA buzz from combine; QB/Drew Stanton could be hot commodity-Colts will try and re-sign him otherwise keep an eye on the Vikings & Cardinals.”
Stanton feels like exactly the kind of QB the Vikes would pursue to back up Christian Ponder. An okay #2 option but not someone who would seriously challenge Ponder in training camp or otherwise make Ponder feel nervous about his starting status. In other words, a non-threatening straight back-up who unlike Joe Webb might be capable of actually running the offense in a competent manner should the need arise for him to do so.
Stanton’s career in the NFL has been undistinguished up to this point. In six years split among Detroit, the Jets and Indianapolis, Stanton has thrown the ball 187 times, completing 104 of those passes. He has 5 career TDs against 9 interceptions, and a total of 1,158 yards.
Like I said, a competent back-up – perhaps – but not a guy who will make the emotionally fragile Ponder lose any sleep.
