Longtime Viking and current Seattle Seahawk Antoine Winfield is likely to be cut this weekend and back out on the free agent market per CBS Sports Jason LaCanfora.
Hearing that the Seahawks, so deep in the secondary, will be releasing CB Antoine Winfield.
This presents an interesting scenario for the Vikings. For one, he knows the defense extremely well having spent 9 seasons here. Secondly, his children still live in the Twin Cities attending local schools. And third, the season begins next weekend and if he were to go to any other team it would take time to acclimate to their defense and community.
One could argue that Winfield is 36-years-old now with age getting the best of us eventually and if he can’t make the Seahawks roster then why would be an asset here. That is a compelling point, however both Vikings nickel corners Bobby Felder and Marcus Sherels struggled this preseason in coverage. The Vikings could also move Jarius Wright to punt returner, as he did it in Arkansas and in camp as a rookie. It’s also worth mentioning that Seattle’s secondary is somewhat of an embarrassment of riches with Richard Sherman, Brandon Browner, Walter Thurmond III, Jeremy Lane and Tharold Simon all currently on their roster at cornerback.
What is also certain is that Rick Spielman is monitoring this situation. He was wise enough to cut Winfield before being due $7 million in 2013 and we’ll all be watching to see how this one plays out.
