It’s official. Matt Cassel has been named the Vikings starting quarterback for week 4 in London against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Cassel will get this opportunity because of an injury to Christian Ponder’s ribs that has kept him from being able to throw the football with as much power as usual. Ponder spent Friday’s practice on the sidelines while Cassel got the reps with the first team.
The Vikings spread the news of their decision through this tweet earlier today:
It will be interesting to see how different the Vikings offense is with Cassel at the helm. The team was already in the middle of a quarterback controversy prior to Ponder’s injury. If Cassel plays well on Sunday, the questions surrounding Ponder’s future would be even more in doubt.
You can catch the game between the Vikings and the Steelers from London, England on CBS at noon Central Time on Sunday.
