As you may remember (or not, depending on how much you care about it), The Viking Age wrote an article earlier this year about how Rodney Smith was a name that Vikings fans should learn. Although it was anticipated that Smith would spend at least one season on Minnesota’s practice squad, the team seems to feel that he is ready for a bigger role.  Today, the Vikings placed linebacker Desmond Bishop on injured reserve for the year.  With the roster spot that was opened up by this, the team decided to promote Rodney Smith to the active roster.

Smith may not see the field much during games, since the Vikings are already struggling to get snaps for other wide receivers on the roster, but his size may make him an appealing target in the red zone.  Imagine a play where Rodney Smith, Joe Webb, and Kyle Rudolph are all on the field on the goal line and teams have to try to guess as to who will get the jump ball.  It is a defense’s nightmare.

It is exciting for Smith to get this opportunity so soon, but we may have to wait a bit longer to see him make an impact on the field.
