The trade deadline is like a bad magic act. There’s this long suspenseful build-up and then a tiny puff of smoke and nothing has disappeared. All the guys we speculated might be on their way out of Minnesota are still in Minnesota, including Jared Allen, who may or may not have been the subject of trade talks all throughout Tuesday, we’ll just never know.

Jared may or may not have wanted out of Minnesota, but making trades happen in the NFL isn’t easy especially when guys are owed lots of money. It’s a moot point now because Jared is still a Viking. Allen expressed his feelings about all this in a text message to Jay Glazer.

“Proud to still be a Viking. I watched all the trade stuff like everyone else. It is a part of this business. 100% committed to turning this season around,” Allen said.

At various times during the day Tuesday we heard Jared might be headed to Seattle, or Denver, or possibly New England. These may have been legit rumors or they may have been incredibly thin ones that were fleshed out by NFL insiders eager to score web traffic.

Anyway it was an amusing way to spend a Tuesday afternoon, watching all this unfold on Twitter, and in the end the Vikings made nothing happen. Now back to obsessing over the quarterback situation.
