The Vikings are down one member of their 2013 draft class. On Wednesday the Dallas Cowboys reached into the cookie jar of talent that is the Vikings’ practice squad and plucked defensive tackle Everett Dawkins, a seventh-round selection out of Florida State.
Dawkins was signed to the 53-man roster in Dallas and is expected to immediately jump into the Cowboys’ defensive tackle rotation. Earlier in the week the Cowboys dumped DT Marvin Austin, opening up a spot.
The Cowboys reportedly had Dawkins graded as a third round pick going into this year’s draft. Nevertheless, they passed on Dawkins who fell all the way to the seventh round where the Vikings selected him.
Dawkins failed to win a job on the Vikings’ active roster, but was signed to the practice squad after final cuts. Despite numerous injuries along the defensive line, plus the defection of Christian Ballard, the Vikings saw no reason to protect Dawkins by signing him to the 53-man roster.
So Dawkins gets a fresh start in Dallas under Rod Marinelli. Dawkins said of his Big D opportunity, “I just have to make sure I take advantage of everything to my full potential and just go and show I’m not one of the guys that’s leaving.”
