After this season, Minnesota Vikings running back Toby Gerhart will be a free agent. Since he is the backup to future Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson, the team can’t throw a lot of money at him to keep him. Therefore, he will probably not be a Viking after this year.
This brings up an interesting situation. A lot of teams are looking for workhorse backs or big backs to block or pick up short yardage. However, fullback Jerome Felton sees a lot more in Gerhart that just a backup or pass blocker.
“I know he’s going to be a free agent after this year, and I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of teams trying to get him,” Felton said to TwinCities.com.
Gerhart agrees with Felton. He believes he can be more than his current role.
“I think I can definitely be a feature back, a 1,000-yard rusher, if I had the carries and the opportunities,” said Gerhart. “But, right now, I’m where I’m at and I’ve got a role I got to embrace.”
Will Gerhart leave Minnesota for a bigger payday and more carries? Or will he stay on with the Vikings after this year and continue playing second fiddle to Adrian Peterson? We will all find out this offseason.
