Rick Spielman’s family won’t be seeing much of him in the coming weeks, because he will be too busy interviewing coaching candidates. The latest big-name assistant to be contacted by the Vikings as part of their intensive effort to find a new head coach? Greg Roman, offensive coordinator for San Francisco.

Minnesota is only at the “reaching out” stage with Roman, who can’t be interviewed until after San Francisco’s season ends. The 49ers – you may have heard about this, I don’t know – beat the Packers in Lambeau Field Sunday to advance to the divisional round.

The 41-year-old Roman has been joined at the hip with Jim Harbaugh since Harbaugh was head coach at Stanford. Before jumping on the Harbaugh ship, Roman spent a year as an offensive coordinator at Holy Spirit High School in New Jersey. Who’s that other famous guy currently working as an offensive coordinator in high school?

Roman has become a hot name in the coaching ranks largely thanks to his work the last two seasons maximizing the talents of Colin Kaepernick. That whole “ability to develop young QBs” thing will be brought up a lot as a positive when Roman’s name is mentioned.

His complete lack of head coaching experience will be brought up as a negative.
